A First-Time Visitor’s Guide to Vail Village

Snow-covered rooftops in Vail Village beneath ski slopes and a partly cloudy sky.

Vail Village offers a first introduction to Vail through its pedestrian streets, chalet-style buildings, shops and galleries. You can spend part of a visit exploring on foot, then add a museum stop or a trip to neighboring Lionshead. Discover Vail’s Vail Village guide provides an overview of the area.

Getting Your Bearings

Vail Village and Lionshead are two main villages at the base of Vail Mountain. Both have shops, restaurants and lodging, with views of the surrounding mountains. The regional visitor bureau lists Vail’s elevation at 8,150 feet. See its Vail overview for more background.

Walking is one way to explore the village centers. For trips farther afield, Vail’s free town bus system connects villages, ski areas and neighborhoods. Check the route and schedule for your destination rather than assuming every stop is served by the same bus. Discover Vail’s transportation guide links to current schedules and parking information.

Explore Colorado’s Ski History

The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame explores skiing and snowboarding in Colorado. Its collections cover the evolution of snowboarding and the legacy of the 10th Mountain Division, while interactive exhibits offer another way to explore that history.

The museum is located at 231 South Frontage Road East, near the village’s covered bridge. Check the museum’s visitor information for current hours before planning your stop.

Leave Time to Wander

Vail Village has boutiques, outdoor outfitters, gift shops and art galleries. For a relaxed first visit, choose a few places that interest you and leave room to browse along the way. Families can combine a museum visit with a walk and a meal, rather than filling the day with scheduled activities.

If ice skating or a scenic gondola ride is on your list, check seasonal operations, ticket requirements and availability before building your plans around it. The official village guide links to activity information.

Start with the Welcome Center

The Vail Village Welcome Center is on the top level of the Vail Village Parking Garage. Staff can help with directions and information about dining, shopping, lodging, activities and events.

While there, look above the desk for Red Eddy, a suspended artwork by Paul Vexler. Find contact details and location information on the official welcome-center page.

For your first visit, consider keeping the plan simple: get your bearings, explore the village and choose one or two activities that suit your interests and the season.
