Winter lodging reservations at western mountain destinations were running behind last year as of September 30. That is useful context for a Vail Valley trip, but it is not proof that local rooms will be cheap or that the ski season will be slow.
Inntopia’s October DestiMetrics update reports an 8.3% year-over-year decline in on-the-books occupancy for November through March across the western mountain destinations it tracks. The company also reported a strong September: occupancy rose 6.6%, average daily rates rose 9.6%, and lodging revenue rose 16.7% compared with September 2025.
What does “on the books” mean?
It measures reservations already made at a point in time. It does not measure final occupancy after travelers book later, cancel or change dates. The September 30 snapshot showed December bookings down 6.9% and March down 17.1% from the same point a year earlier. Average daily rates for the five winter months were still up 1.4% overall.
These are regional figures, not a Vail-only report. They cannot tell you what a particular Vail, Avon or Beaver Creek hotel will charge on your dates.
Does slower booking mean lower prices?
Not necessarily. Properties can adjust rates or offer packages, but a weaker booking snapshot does not guarantee discounts. Holiday weeks, weekends, room type and cancellation rules can matter more to your individual trip than a regional average.
Compare the total stay cost, including lodging fees, parking and transportation. A room with a higher nightly rate may be cheaper overall if it reduces travel costs. A refundable reservation can give you flexibility while you watch prices, provided you understand its deadline and terms.
A practical plan for Vail Valley visitors
- Check more than one set of dates. Midweek and non-holiday trips may offer different choices.
- Compare neighborhoods and transportation before choosing a room. Decide whether you need to drive to the mountain each day.
- Read cancellation and deposit terms before paying. “Book now” is only useful if the terms fit your plans.
- Check current resort conditions and official travel information closer to departure. Early bookings do not predict snowfall.

Inntopia’s report signals that travelers have been slower to commit to winter dates across its sample. It does not yet settle what the final season will look like. Use it as a reason to compare options carefully, rather than as a promise of bargains.
